Housing is the part of a contract nobody wants to spend a week solving. Granny McRae’s is a mid-century house in the Turnagain area of Anchorage with six private rooms and a studio suite, rented by the month to people working here rather than sightseeing.

Rooms are furnished, utilities and Wi-Fi are in the rate, and there is laundry in the house. Bring a suitcase and your badge.

Getting to work

The house sits about 10–15 minutes from Providence Alaska Medical Center, and within a similar drive of Alaska Regional Hospital and the Alaska Native Medical Center. Ted Stevens airport is 5–7 minutes away, which matters on the two days of a contract when it really matters.

There is free off-street parking on site, so a rental car is not a problem, and public transport runs nearby if you would rather not have one.

What a contract stay costs

A private room with a shared bathroom starts at $800 a month, utilities, Wi-Fi and laundry included. The Suite, at $1,500 a month, is fully self-contained — private full bathroom, kitchenette, two queen beds and a futon — which suits nurses travelling with a partner or a second contract nurse splitting the cost.

What the house is actually like

It is a shared house, not an apartment block, and that is the point for some people and not for others. There is a full kitchen you can cook a real meal in, a living room with books, board games and instruments, a workspace, a deck and a fire pit. Other guests are usually here working too.

You get keypad entry to the house and a lock on your own bedroom door. Night-shift sleepers: Room 4 and Room 5 are the quietest, and Room 3 is the brightest — worth knowing in June, when Anchorage barely gets dark.
